Kamwamba Coal-Power Plant Commission In 2025
Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) says they expect to commission the 300 megawatts Kammwamba Coal-powered plant in 2025 as they have just finished doing feasibility study on the site.
Spokesperson for EGENCO, Moses Gwaza has told Zodiak that they did the study in collaboration with a Germany company, Fichtner, focusing on updating the previous techno-economic feasibility study and its environmental and social impact.
Gwaza says they have written the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA) seeking for a no-objection, to engage an interested investor before the project commences.
"At this point we cannot say how much the project will take as we are still waiting to find a partner for the construction works. The cost will depend on the successful investor who want to partake in the project," said Gwaza.
An energy expert, Dr. Sugzo Kaunda says the delay of the project is affecting the economy but has urged EGENCO not to rush the processes as it may affect the quality of the power plant.
"We still have less power, therefore some of major industries that needs power will not start operating in the country, this Kamwamba project could ease those challenges.
"Let them take their time because we want to have a power system that will be reliable," said Kaunda.
If finalized the Kamwamba coal-power plant will inject 300 Megawatts to the country power grid and the costs of electricity will be reduced.
