Three villages in Thyolo have threatened to take unspecified action against Mafisi Tea Estates Limited following what the villagers call intrusion and tampering with their graveyard.

Some community members, Mr. Devison Kavute, Daniel Kachule and Jonas Galasiano from Ndombole, Namiwa and Kapichi villages have told Zodiak that the company is being inconsiderate to dig macadamia nut trenches, minimizing passage along the road to their ancestral graveyard.

"We have been using this graveyard since the colonial era. Our parents' houses were here, but were chased by the white settlers. Then we are just surprised that the estate as it is planting the macadamia, they are coming closer to this place. People here are angry with this," Kavute said.

Galasiano added: "We have tried to engage them, but they don't want peace".

A visit by Zodiak at the site found that the company has cleared roads and dug macadamia trenches close and around the graveyard.

Meanwhile, Group Village Namiwa says communities are angry and have since stopped the company from tampering with the graveyard because it has been there since colonial era.

"It is sad.  Historically, we didn't ask for this graveyard from the estate. What happened is that, the colonialists chased our parents here to these three villages. The company found this graveyard here.

"So the company is being inconsiderate and has been given few days to revisit its actions or face the wrath of the people in future", GVH Namiwa said.

Mafisi Tea Estate Limited Manager, Mr. Pilira Chiseko, has refuted the claims, saying "the graveyard is in the estate land and the company is just constructing the fence on the macadamia field".

Chiseko says the communities were just allowed to be using the graveyard in the estate land.
