Procure Vehicle Apprehension Equipment for Traffic Officers - Govt Told

A road safety stakeholder has asked the Malawi Police and Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services to immediately procure vehicle apprehension equipment to empower traffic officers to forcefully stop vehicles of reckless drivers to ensure safety of officers on duty.

Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF) Executive Director, Joel Jere, while citing an incident in Mangochi where traffic officer Sergeant Patricia Chinguwo, was killed by unruly driver, says time has come for security authorities to arm the officers with road safety equipment, such as grapplers, tire spikes and brackets.

"We are saying traffic officers need to have proper equipment for their safety. We already have a problem as a country, we are having too much of road accidents and negligence," Jere said.

He has further urged drivers’ associations and road safety civil society organizations to invest efforts and resources to improve the relationship between traffic police officers and drivers, which is currently hostile.

Principal secretary in ministry of homeland security, Kennedy Nkhoma, says government is equally concerned with the increased incidents of reckless driving and has asked the stakeholders to come forth to help in procuring the road safety high-tech equipment in the country.

"It's first disheartening to lose a person who was on duty. The suggestion that has been made is most welcome. As government, we will be interested to join hands with them and make sure that we acquire such equipment because it would be able help to avert any elements of other deaths which may be caused by reckless driving in the country," Nkhoma said.

Malawi is a signatory of a UN Decade of Action which target to reduce road accidents by 50 percent come 2030.
