Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has asked the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of parliament to summon Inspector General of police on the alleged indicators of incompetence and criminal negligence.

CDEDI Executive Director, Sylvester Namiwa, says the IG Dr George Kainja, has failed to fulfill pledges to mend the sour relations between police and the citizens and improve internal security lapses such as the recent murders and police station's break-ins.

"For instance, under his watch, robbers have managed to break into police stations where they stole items including a gun and rampant gruesome killings such as, a legal practitioner in Blantyre MRA official in Dedza, anD MDF soldier in Lilongwe and some security guards across the country.

"In a mature democracy, the IG would have resigned," Namiwa said.

Namiwa has since asked the PAC of parliament to summon Dr. Kainja to exonerate himself on the increased indicators of incompetence and criminal negligence.

Chairperson Joyce Chitsulo, says the committee will write Dr. Kainja to respond on the matter and where necessary would be summoned to the committee.

"I have really received the letter. So, what we will do as a committee, we will write the Inspector General of police to hear his side of the police. If he has challenges, we will agree on the way forward. Mind you, the issue of security is not for one man, it’s for all of us", Chitsulo said.

This comes when over the weekend, a group of armed robbers also attempted to break into the FDH bank ATM at Malamulo Nursing College in Thyolo.
