Opportunity International Malawi Launches Tree Planting With VSLAs

Opportunity International Malawi has on Sunday, launched a Tree planting exercise at Jafali village under Traditional Authority Kawinga in Machinga, where two thousand trees have planted together with Village Saving Loans Associations (VSLA).

Programmes manager at Opportunity International Malawi, Generose Ndalami Dziko said they targeted the VSLA's as they are very effective tools in delivery of developmental projects to the communities.

Dziko said planting trees is an important activity for everyone to take part to help deal with effects of climate change which is been manifested through the recent cyclones and floods.

She said climate change has hit hard on people living in rural areas, hence her organization launching the project.

"Trees are beneficial to everyone, but since we have destroyed the country's vegetative cover, now we are experiencing harsh effects of climate change" said Dziko.

"Here in Machinga we are encouraging families to plant at least three to five trees and above because at the end other the day, we will all benefit the good effects of nature," She added.

Village Saving Loans Associations extension officer in Machinga, Felina Kamangazula thanked Opportunity International Malawi for the tree planting tree project saying it will help boosting the district's vegetation.

Opportunity International Malawi is implementing the project in four districts of Rumphi, Machinga, Likoma and Nkhatabay with funding from FARMSE.
