Sheriffs have impounded the Thyolo District Council's vehicle for failure to pay K32 million of damages to Thyolo Active Youth Organization (TAYO) that lost an office building to new stadium construction.

In an interview with Zodiak on Sunday, TAYO Executive Director, Willard Mwambo, says their counsel, Nsungama and Company, involved the Sheriffs to impound the vehicle because the council was not complying with the order.

"It was the responsibility of the council to comply with the order by the High court. But, up to now we have not received any compensation from them", Mwambo said.

On February 3, 2022, High Court Assistant Registrar, Chapita Banda, ordered the defendant to pay the claimant K32 Million as compensations and goodwill for the office which was demolished due to construction of the new stadium.

However, due to the non-compliance, Sheriffs have impounded a vehicle council.

Thyolo District Commissioner, Douglas Moffat, has confirmed the development that TAYO wanted the council to pay the compensation right away.

However, DC Moffat says the council will move the court to stay the order so that it settles the compensation in instalments.

"The court agreed with us to pay him K32 million for compensation and goodwill. Apparently, the council has not said it will going to pay, no, but it has so many types of services it provides, most of them life-saving.

"So, we have gone back to the court to request for a stay order so that we can be paying for a longer and defined period," Moffat said.

The office which had computer laboratory, technical skills centre, warehouse, entertainment and conference halls, was demolished in 2018.
