Bt Urban DEM Says Teachers Need Special Needs Skills

Education authorities in Blantyre Urban say early identification of children with special needs can assist the country to minimize the availability of street connected kids.

District Education Manager for Blantyre Urban Annita Kaliu has told Zodiak that partners should therefore come in to support government in providing special needs skills to primary education teachers to handle such children at an early stage.

“We believe that children with special needs have to be spotted at an early stage for necessary support. For this to happen, teachers need to be imparted with relevant skills,” said Kaliu.

She believes that such an initiative can improve access to quality education to special needs children.

“Parents also have the duty to take care of children with special needs by encouraging them to attend school,” she explained.

On his part, Director of Montessori Teacher Training Centre Ceaser Kondowe said his organization will continue to support primary school teachers with necessary support in Malawi.

“Through this Centre, we are offering special needs training to government primary school teachers to promote quality special needs education.

“We feel bad when we see children begging in streets of which some are gradually turning into thugs committing various crimes,” said Kondowe.

The program has to this far trained about 1, 000 teachers.
