The Society of Medical Doctors (SMD) has expressed concern over what it calls are misleading adverts on herbal medicine and supplements which it says are growing in the country.

SMD Secretary General, Dr. Parth Patel, says consequences of use of such untested products include permanent and irreversible damage to the liver, kidney, brain and essentially any organ within the body.

“Although the misleading adverts claim promising results with the use of these herbal products, almost all of them remain untested for their efficacy and harmful side effects.

“Drug manufacturers are required to follow a set standard to ensure safe formation of products as stipulated by the World Health Organization (WHO),” he said.

President of Herbalists Association of Malawi, Robin Zaniku, has, however, challenged media houses to put money aside and censor themselves when accepting adverts.

“We have been telling media houses not to accept adverts that say they cure some diseases such as AIDS, COVID19 and others because we have not had research on them,” he said.

SMD has recommended the use of medical help and tested and certified remedies when need be.
