CARD Executive Director, Melton Luhanga, told Zodiak Online on Thursday, that they are duty bound to respond to the emergency after securing the funds from Irish Government.

"As you know this area is under an emergency and the president declared a state of disaster to those districts areas affected by Tropical Storm Ana.

"Recently, we also had storm Gombe and a lot of people were affected. Their houses were damaged and their property including livestock were swept away by floods.

"We know that other institutions have been providing items in response but we thought of giving them cash apart from that so that they are able to buy their necessities," explained Luhanga.

He added, "we believe they will be able to afford their necessities with K25,000 they have each received.”

Phillip Nyasulu, Trocaire Climate Justice and Disaster Risk Management Officer, said “we have rendered a helping hand, because part of our focus area is supporting to save lives as well as respecting human dignity."

A beneficiary, Alice Dimingu, currently seeking shelter at Nyambesa camp, hailed the support.

"I am suffering, I lost all my possessions to floods, the money will make a difference," explained Dimingu.

Apart from Nyambesa, flood survivors at Khope camp, have also benefited from the cash transfer program.
