Financial Challenges Shut Goal Malawi Down

After 20 years in the service, a non-governmental organization, Goal Malawi has halted all its operations in the country effective 31 March 2022 due to funding constraints caused by Covid 19.

In an interview with Zodiak on Thursday, Goal Malawi country director, Jessica Cope said just like all non-governmental organizations based in Malawi, it is so hard to find funding calling it as competitive.

Cope says her organization has had a successful spell in the country as they have implemented several projects that will sustain people from one generation to the other.

"The decision was hard but we just had to make it due to financial challenges, which our organization have struggled with," noted Cope.

"We hope our projects have transformed the lives of many in this country and that should have an impact on the coming generation.

Council for Non-governmental Organizations (CONGOMA) Chairperson, Kossam Munthali has called Goal Malawi's exit as a great loss.

Munthali, however, suggests the review of exit strategies and regulations as stipulated in NGO Policy of 2018 to help in sustainability of projects by international organizations.

"This is where the issue of transformation and sustainability comes in when it comes to projects. Government should review the 2018 NGO Policy to help international non-organizations on exit strategies and regulations. It is a great loss to the nation, Goal has achieved a lot," said Munthali.
