Barely few days after Luchenza Police in Thyolo arrested three people in connection to theft of railway materials along Limbe-Sandama railway line which is under rehabilitation, today two other suspects have also been nabbed over the same.

South East Police spokesperson Rodrick Maida has confirmed to Zodiak that the duo, Alexander Macheso aged 25, from Nanseta Village and Alex Sekhwe, 21, of Muhura Village both from Traditional Authority Nanseta in Thyolo, have been found with 16 railway sleepers in a Fuso Fighter 5-tonner vehicle registration number TO 1487.

Maida said the suspects have been arrested in the wee hours of today at Njaiti Village after police intercepted the truck and found sleepers which were covered with sand in the vehicle.

"In the wee hours of April 15, 2022, Luchenza police station patrol team whilst on duty intercepted the truck and recover 16 railway sleepers that were covered with sand from the motor vehicle. They immediately arrested two suspects in the process. Meanwhile suspects are in police custody whilst the motor vehicle has been impounded. Suspects are going to appear before court to answer a case of theft after completion of paperwork.

"We are warning Malawians with evil intentions who would want to jeopardize the construction of railway line, that when they come here in Luchenza to steal the materials will be arrested as per their friends," He said.

The arrest follows increased theft reports of railway materials along Nansadi, Ndata farm, Makandi and seven villages in Luchenza where Nacala logistics is rehabilitating a 72 kilometre Limbe-Sandama railway section.
