The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has indicated that all camps of flood survivors will be decommissioned by next month.

DoDMA Commissioner Charles Kalemba has told Zodiak that they have already decommissioned camps in Phalombe, Neno and part of Mulanje but they are largely remaining with the Shire valley where other people need new land for permanent relocation.

“We have so far managed to decommission several camps in some districts but we are remaining with many others in Chikwawa and Nsanje.

“You know, the process there will take some time because some people require new land for settlement for they cannot go back to their original flood prone areas,” said Kalemba.

He added that four villages including Kanseche in Chikwawa are expected to settle in safe places.

Commissioner Kalemba further explained that those flood survivors whose camps have been decommissioned have been provided with a take home package to begin a new life.

“The department does not give all materials for reconstruction but we gave them just a take home package like roofing plastics, kitchen utensils among others,” explained the commissioner.

Authorities in Shire valley told us that they have secured land for some flood survivors’ settlements while waiting for non-governmental organizations to construct resilient houses for the people.

“The district has indeed acquired land for settlement of flood survivors. We are just finalizing other processes,” said Chikwawa District Commissioner Ali Phiri.

Early this year, back to back cyclones razed down people' houses, killing and injuring others, cutting off roads and washing away crops and livestock.
