As you go through the area, the road uphill is impassable, no reliable water sources as one well dug in 2012 is serving over 3000 people of the area who have never had borehole, no health center only a grass-thatched malfunctioning Under-5 clinic, no police station, no full primary school but again only a grass-thatched junior primary school that has 350 learners mostly aged 13 to 17 against two government teachers.

Headteacher at Mtendachi Junior Primary School, Fredson Jesimani says the school started operating in January this year following efforts from community members.

He says they lack necessary teaching equipment and they travel a long distance to Ntaja to access banking services every month-end.

"It's a struggle for us here, we are handling over 350 learners at this school, no water, no enough teaching and learning materials, and to get our money on monthly basis we need to spend so much due to distance," Jesimani explained.

Traditional Authority Sale says vendors are taking advantage of the topography of the area to buy the people's farm produce at lower prices due to distance and unavailability of a good road network.

"We are in an isolated area which vendors take as their playground when purchasing our agriculture commodities. It is sad that nobody wants to support these people especially government," said TA Sale.

Expectant women from the area travel about 35 kilometers downhill to Mkwepele health for medical attention.

Member of Parliament Ajilu Kalitendere said he will use the improved Constituency Development Fund to improve the livelihoods of the people.

"I am aware of the challenges these people are facing. This place has been deserted for a long time but this year I will implement some projects for the betterment of these people's lives using constituency development funds," noted Kalitendere.

People of Mtendachi Mountain are living in a world of their own but a Malawian ballot paper doesn't miss them every five years.
