Motorcycle Operators Training, Licensing on Course - Minister

As one way of curbing increased road accidents, Ministry of Transport says it has in partnership with driving schools started providing cheaper and affordable licenses to motorcycle operators.

Speaking to Zodiak on Thursday, Minister responsible Jacob Hara, says, currently government has provided the schools with hand books to train the motorists on the Highway Code.

Without quantifying the beneficiaries and license fees, Hara says, currently there a tremendous progress in registering, training and providing licenses to motorcycle operators.

"For the motorbikes, there have been a tremendous progress. We have provided the training schools with hand books and we have been registering motorbike operators with licenses which are cheaper and affordable," he said.

Hara thinks, this would go a mile in reducing road accidents since they would have minimum knowledge of traffic regulations and speak one language with other road users.

Meanwhile, Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF) Executive Director Joel Jere, has hailed the move, calling on government to engage other stakeholders and subsidize the trainings to accommodate many.

"If the government has taken this initiative to engage the driving schools and given them the training manuals, that is very important and good progress," Jere said.

Last year, police clashed with Kabaza operators when impounding hundreds of unregistered motorcycles across the country.

However, days later, authorities returned the motorcycles to the owners with an aim of facilitating their trainings and licensing.
