Irate communities in Thyolo have destroyed a and burnt to the ground Thekerani Police Unit after a suspect was found dead in the police cell.

An eye witness told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that the suspect was arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing a motorbike, but was found hanging from the roof of the cell.

"Last night, police arrested a boy for allegedly stealing a motorbike. Then today, he asked officers to relieve himself, that time his cell mates asked him to eat, but he refused and entered again into the cell. After some time, we hear when officers checked the cell, they found him dead while hanging from the roof of the cell.

"Some people reported the matter to his mother and relatives who demanded to see him. They opened the window of the cell where they saw that he was hanging from the roof while in a handcuff.

The witness further explained "this angered the communities who started stoning the window glasses, office equipment and other appliances."

Thyolo Police Deputy Publicist Rabecca Kashoti, has asked for more time as more officers have been deployed to the area to quell the tension as rioters are reportedly taking to the main road from Thyolo to Thekerani.

"Give us some time. We will rely on the information from some officers who have rushed there to get more details," she briefly said.

This is the third incident this year alone in the district after communities also destroyed Bvumbwe and Khonjeni Police Units on similar manner.
