Kayuni Commences Criminal Proceedings Against Eight Lawyers

The Director of Public Prosecution, Dr Steve Kayuni, says has started a process of criminal proceedings against some eight lawyers that reportedly embezzled millions of clients’ money.

It is reported that other lawyers misappropriated about K40 million of which some of the victims are widows.

Dr Kayuni says after receiving a letter from Malawi Law Society to investigate the lawyers, he has now written to the Malawi Police Service to provide his office with an investigator to build a criminal case against the lawyers.

“Upon communication from the law society which we did receive, the recommendations were that criminal proceedings should be undertaken against those lawyers.

“We are liaising with the investigative branch, the Malawi Police Service, so that the processes can run and be taken to court,” said Dr Kayuni.

This comes when Chief Justice Rizine Mzikamanda debarred one lawyer and suspended two others from practicing law for two years for embezzling clients’ money.

The Chief Justice termed such malpractices professional misconduct which can never be tolerated.

On his part, Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda said lawyers need to be honest and trustworthy considering that their profession is of integrity.

“We commend the court for imposing punishments on some legal practitioners to safeguard the integrity of the profession,” explained Nyirenda.
