The Director of Mangochi Gateway College Clifford Pangani on Tuesday changed his plea from guilty to not guilty on charges of procuring of executions of documents by false pretense and uttering false documents levelled against him.

When he appeared in court in Mulanje on 27th May 2022 he pleaded guilty to both charges and pleaded not guilty to obtaining money by false pretense but on Tuesday he changed and pleaded not guilty to all the three charges.

The court did not object to both applications.

As it stands, Pangani has three cases to answer; procuring of executions of documents by false pretense, uttering false documents and obtaining money by false pretense.

His lawyer, Kondwani Dennis Kumitengo made fresh bail applications for his client but as was the case last week, Senior Resident Magistrate Shaheeda Bakili objected to the application.

In a related development, James Bonga who was arrested on Monday for allegedly pasting on the college’s gate that the institution will be opened this month end appeared in the court on Tuesday.

Bonga was being charged with conspiracy to commit a felony, forgery, uttering false documents and obtaining money by false pretense and he pleaded not guilty to all counts.

Counsel Kondwani Dennis Kumitengo who is also representing Bonga in the case applied for bail for his client but Magistrate Bakili also objected to the application.

Both cases have been adjourned to 27th June 2022.

Pangani is accused of defrauding college students close to K14 million meant for examination fees through his suspected bogus Malawi Business Administrators (MBA) examinations board.
