Leader of Opposition in parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has called for unity as the country commemorates 58 years of independence.

Speaking to Zodiak Online on Wednesday, Nankhumwa reminded Malawians to bury their political, religious, tribal lines and reflect on unity as a nation.

Nankhumwa says "Malawians should now reflect on their political life despite current challenges to unite and move forward."

This comes as Nankhumwa and others have been embroiled in political fighting within the top leadership of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

He says this should involve burying political, religious and ethnic differences, while remembering those who fought for freedom and democracy.

Meanwhile, while commending Nankhumwa for the message of unity, political and governance expert George Chaima has urged him to live by example.

"That word of unity is good to the nation. But it should start with him and his own party. We need Malawians, politicians and different stakeholders of the society to be united.

"This country cannot proceed or move forward if we are divided,"

Similarly, writing on his Facebook page, former president and DPP leader Arthur Peter Mutharika has appealed to Malawians to reflect on the country’s history while digging deep into the thoughts of those who fought for the independence of Malawi.

"We will make commitments to unite ourselves, have a common purpose as a nation and become a prosperous nation," wrote Mutharika.
