The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has awarded scholarships to 19 outstanding engineering female students from the Malawi University of Technology (MUST) and Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) at ESCOM Mpemba Training Centre in Blantyre.

ESCOM through its Policy of Social and Gender Inclusion  has awarded nine female students under Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Energy Systems and ten female students pursuing Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from MUST and MUBAS respectively.

The Social and Gender Inclusion Manager for ESCOM Elube Chiyenda says ESCOM signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the two higher learning institutions to start offering scholarships and internships in 2014 to best female performing students under engineering programs as one way of increasing number of girls in tertiary education.

Chiyenda says more girls are performing very well due to introduction of this scholarship.

According to Chiyenda, the scholarship aims at increasing more skilled women engineers who will add value towards ESCOM service delivery since they are also attached to the entity.

One of the representatives from MUST, who is also a final year Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Energy Systems student, Tamandani Zinyawo, says the scholarship will lessen the burden of school fees towards parents and guardians as the problem has been addressed by the scholarship.

"I’m very grateful for this award by ESCOM since it has been used to propel my studies," Tamandani said.

The Chief Executive Officer for Escom Kamkwamba Kumwenda says Escom will continue empowering best female engineering students as they will have impact towards their service of supplying electricity across the country.

MUBAS Vice Chancellor, Nancy Chitera, expressed gratitude towards ESCOM for assisting female students in terms of tuition fees since students are not allowed to write examinations without paying for their fees.

Chitera says "8, 11, 16, and 10 best female students from faculty of engineering have benefitted from the scholarship in 2018, 2019 2021 and 2022 respectively".

Chitera added that through Entrepreneurial and Innovation Strategy, students and staff members will be going to industry for internships and externships in order to fully produce desired skilled labor in the country.

The Executive Dean of Ndata School of Climate and Healthy Sciences for MUST,  Dr. Wilfred Kadewa, concurred with Prof. Chitera that they will strive to make sure that their students continue performing well while benefitting the yearly Escom award.

The two institutions have received a total amount of MK8, 050, 000.00 scholarship.
