COST Country Chairperson Joe Ching’ani says the construction industry needs to be accountable and professional in its activities to spearhead standard work in the country.

“We dream to have a construction sector that is accountable, transparent, responsible and professional because when all is said and done, it is taxpayers’ money that is a real issue,” said Ching’ani.

He added that COST will continue to monitor all donor and government funded construction projects to ensure that stakeholders adhere to laws of Malawi.

Meanwhile, The Department of Disaster Management Affairs, (Dodma) says apart from a few households that are awaiting permanent relocation in some areas of Chikwawa and Nsanje, all camps of flood survivors were decommissioned.

Dodma Commissioner Charles Kalemba stated that what remains now is to implement recovery programs by making sure that people get back to their normal life.

He explained that the government has received K14 billion insurance money from the African Development Bank to support those that were severely affected by cyclones early this year.

“This will enhance provision of food to flood survivors, social cash transfers and public works activities,” explained Kalemba.

That aside, the World Bank approved K60 billion of which K36 billion is a credit while K24 billion is a grant to rehabilitate Kapichira power station, support the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi among others.
