FEDOMA Hails Five Ministries on Disability Inclusion

The country’s disability movement, FEDOMA has rated highly the Ministry of Health, Education, Labour, Finance and Local government to have responded positively to disability issues in line with the five-year National Disability Mainstreaming Strategy and Implementation Plan (2018-2023).

Four years on, the Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi (FEDOMA) Acting executive director Symon Munde, says, the ministries have been responsive to disability issues from planning stages, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development interventions.

"I would say these ministries have done quite some significant achievements. But for most of the ministries I think its been a problem," he said.

Munde has since reminded other state actors that, despite Malawi being a signitory to various international instruments on the same, people with disabilities are also part of the country’s population that need to be taken on board.

But, speaking to Zodiak Online on Wednesday, social welfare and community development ministry spokesperson Fred Simwaka, while noting various reforms undertaken towards the plan, says it would be too early to start singling out the outstanding institutions, adding that proper assessment and evaluation will be done soon.

Nonetheless, Simwaka noted that "during the implementation period, the country has seen some policy reforms in both the public and private sectors, such as policy reviews or development taking inclusion approaches where issues of persons with disabilities have been on the center stage."

To turn the tables, he says the Ministry will continue to build capacity of all MDAs and the private sector to have an inclusive service delivery system where persons with disabilities equally benefit.

The strategy aims to address exclusion barriers preventing persons with disabilities from participating in national development activities equally.
