GVH Fined for Marrying Of 11-Year-Old Daughter

Traditional Authority Njema of Mulanje has ordered his Group Village Head to pay a fine of two goats after he found him guilty of marrying off his eleven-year-old biological daughter to a Mozambican.

TA Njema told Zodiak Online on Friday that GVH Makokola upon marrying off his daughter who was in standard five told her to flee to Mozambique where he is currently staying with her husband.

“It is disturbing to see some chiefs encouraging child marriages in their villages and I will not tolerate. I will dismiss any Village or Group Village Head found marrying off his or her under-aged daughter,” said the T/A whose area borders Malawi and Mozambique.

However, GVH Makokola says his daughter is 17 and declined to have married her off but has accepted to pay the fine just to respect his boss, the TA.

“Let me tell you that this girl stopped going to school when she was in standard four and it is wrong to say that she was a school going girl,” said GVH Makokola

Mulanje is among the districts with high rates of child marriages.
