The Blantyre Water Board (BWB) has justified the delay to recommence installation of prepaid water meters to residents due to long procurement processes and Covid-19 restrictions.

The board’s public relations officer Evelyn Khonje told Zodiak on Tuesday that they expect to receive the meters from the suppliers from China in the next three months.

“We are expecting 5,000 prepaid meters to be delivered in the next three months,” she said.

Consumer Association of Malawi Executive Director John Kapito says there is a need for the government to carry out vibrant reforms for parastatals to register meaningful progress.

“The challenge we have in this country with our utility providers is that there is no strict monitoring, enforcement and supervision. The boards that run these institutions are politically weak and they do not understand the operations of the institutions they are running,” Kapito said.

According to Kapito, the politically divided attitudes lead to incompetence among workers in utility providers such as water board.

The board has so far installed prepaid water meters to 30, 000 residents in the commercial city.
