Malawi Hopes on India Financiers for Military Hospital

Deputy Minister of Defense Harry Mkandawire says a team of officials is set to leave the country for India soon to hold talks with the prospective funders of the military hospital.

Speaking to Zodiak Online on Monday, Mkandawire said President Lazarus Chakwera has directed for a quick commencement of the hospital.

The hospital was part of the recommendations by the 2013 commission of inquiry into the death of the former President late Bingu wa Mutharika.

Without indicating how much is needed for the military hospital, Mkandawire says its design is out, adding "once constructed it would cut costs for referrals abroad as it will house specialist medical equipment and doctors in Lilongwe."

He said: "There is a team that is travelling to India to meet the possible funders of the project. So the process is on," Mkandawire said.

Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) Executive Director, George Jobe, has hailed the government for the step taken to have the hospital in place.

Jobe has, however, registered a concern over the delay, calling on government to fast-track its construction to ensure it serves the first citizen and others needing special attention.

"We should remember that inquiry came about after the passing on of one of the presidents of this country," he said.
