Police Still Investigating Goliati Police Corruption Allegations

Some community members around Goliati Police Unit in Thyolo have renewed their call for authorities to transfer police officers accused of continually soliciting money from suspects who have settled their cases with complainants through arbitration.

Goliati Police Oversight Committee Chairperson, James Yuda, told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that though police launched investigation on the earlier reports two months ago, they continue receiving concerns on the same.

"There is nothing that changed. I think may be because there is no officer-in-charge at the Unit which they might be afraid of. We continue resolving the issues there," he said.

Thyolo Police Officer in-Charge, Ulemu Kaluwa, said that he is yet to be furnished with an investigation report but further called on other anti-corruption institutions to also get involved.

"Those are issues of corruption so I would encourage all institutions fighting corruption to also take that issue head-on because as police we don't condone or hide anyone. This an individual problem not the general habit of police officers in Thyolo," Kaluwa said.

Two months ago, some law officers at the Unit were accused of demanding money ranging from K20, 000 to K80, 000 to release suspects.
