Chileka Lions Club has donated 10 trash bins to Mulanje district council to support the council in managing solid wastes that are generating in their markets and other public places.

Three bins have been put at Mulanje bus depot.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover ceremony of the bins at the bus depot, president of the Club Kondwani Mkandawire said environmental conservation that includes management of solid wastes is one of the pillars of the club.

“As lions we have obligation to promote general cleanliness in public places and we believe that by donating these trash bins to Mulanje district council, we have contributed to the council’s waste management program,” said Mkandawire.

He said apart from environmental conservation, the lions club is in sight, diabetes, childhood cancer and hunger interventions’ programs.

Acting District Environmental Officer at Mulanje District Council Chicco Kayange said just like any other council in Malawi, the district council is also facing a lot of challenges in managing solid wastes that are generating in its markets and other public places.

“One of the challenges choking cleaning our markets is shortage of garbage bins and surely Chileka Lions Club has reduced this gap,” said Kayange.

According to Mkandawire, Toyota Malawi financed procurement of these trash bins and he said similar donations will be made to Chikwawa, Zomba, Machinga, Salima, Dwangwa in Nkhotakota, Kasungu, and Mangochi districts.
