The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) Eastern Region Office has disclosed plans to introduce its first regional Blood Bank Fridge at Mangochi District Hospital by December this year.

MBTS Eastern Region Assistant Public Relations Officer, McLlyod Kudzingo, revealed this today during a blood collection exercise at Liwonde township in Machinga.

Kudzingo says the blood bank will serve health facilities in Monkeybay, St Martins and Koche, areas, far from the regional office in Balaka.

He adds, they are targeting to collect 14 000 units of blood before March next year from twelve thousand units of last season.

"Our first ever blood bank fridge will be set in Mangochi by December this year because the district has a higher population that stays in long distances, so we want to ease the challenge facilities face," Kudzingo said.

"We have increased our blood target this season from last season's 12 000 units to 14 000 units," he added.

Three time blood donor, Mofart Ndala has urged people to patronize blood donation centers, to help save lives.

"It's high time we supported this exercise wholeheartedly as it is for the betterment of saving someone's life," he noted.
