Sandama Residents Call Police to Beef Up Security

Communities around Sandama trade centre which borders Mozambique have asked the police in Thyolo to deploy more officers following spate of armed robberies.

Speaking to Zodiak Online on Monday, some residents  Robert John, Favour Napasha and Sandama market chairperson Lyfod Divasoni, said for instance in August this year alone, robbers have broken into seven business premises including people's homes where they stole huge sums of money.

"A team of almost 30 robbers are terrorising the homes hacking people  and stealing property including money. As we are speaking someone was hacked severely some few days ago and is battling for his life at the hospital. We are not sleeping", they said.

The locals added: "we are asking the police to deploy some more officers since the unit only has got two which are not enough considering that the area also borders Mozambique. Please, they should consider this with urgency".

They further claimed that currently, everyone including civil servants are scared, forcing others to request for the transfer out.

They have since commended the only two police officers at the Unit who together with the community members have shown their prowess to arrest some three hardcore criminals currently in custody.

Thyolo Police Officer in-Charge Ulemu Kaluwa has assured the community members on Monday that more officers will soon be deployed in all the police units.

"Yes plans are there. We will beef up all our police units in Thyolo", he assured.
