Ladder for Youth and Women Empowerment (LAYWE) has rolled out the Inclusive Youth Skills Development as a pilot project in Mulanje district.

LAYWE Executive Director Chimwemwe Gremu told Zodiak Online that currently they have started with youths living with disabilities from Traditional Authorities Chikumbu and Mabuka in the district.

“We have sent four youths as a first cohort (two boys and two girls) to acquire different vocational skills at Nansomba Community Technical Colllege in Mulanje district and they are expected to finish in December, 2022,” he said.

Gremu said they are supporting the youths with tuition fees and accommodation and he said they are expecting to spend over MK500, 000 for this first cohort.

He said at the end of this four month skills development training, the project expects to see these youths start different entrepreneurships in their respective areas and become self-reliant.

Said Gremu: “Soon we will start lobbying for more support from other partners in order to target more vulnerable youths in Mulanje district as we scale up the piloted initiative to other parts of the district.”

One of the project beneficiaries, 18 year old Lucy Saiti who is undergoing a tailoring training believes this opportunity is a turnaround for her life.

“I hope things will not be the same after completing this training and I say “thank you” to LAYWE for offering me this opportunity,” said Saiti, a girl with albinism.

LAYWE is working with government, local leaders, youth networks and Nansomba Community Technical College in implementing this initiative.
