Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a Clinical Research Excellence and Training Open Resource (CREATOR) building on Thursday in Blantyre, the project’s champion Stephen Gordon said once completed, the training centre will significantly contribute to building human capacity.

“The CREATOR project will allow people to train fully from junior level to professor as researcher in Malawi. But we emphasize research that will benefit health particularly in clinical research,” Professor Gordon said.

Deputy Minister of Health Enock Phale said he is optimistic that the research center will assist Malawi to find solutions to emerging diseases.

“Above all the CREATOR will be utilized for research in the country which started some 25 years ago. To us this is a huge milestone because we will be able to raise people who can do research in such a type of building,” Phale said.

Phale however says his ministry will collaborate with other partners to support the development.

According to Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Program the research centre which will cost about 8 million euros will be ready by December 2023. 

Currently the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome program is   celebrating 25 years of existence in Malawi.
