Luchenza Municipality Mayor Sayze Simeji says his council has set aside K4 million to replace the faulty street lights with a solar system to do away with electricity costs to manage streets lighting.

This follows concerns by residents and the business community that the streets have been dark for about seven months.

"As a council we have budgeted K4 million to replace the faulty street lights with solar system soon. We were finding it hard to buy electricity units.

Chairperson for the Luchenza flea market Jeremia Lazaro raised a security concern and declining business for operating in the dark.

Lazaro says the council on several engagements has been giving unconvincing responses to the darkness in the streets, such as inadequate of funds to settle the electricity bills.

"The delay by the council to fix the street lights is posing a security threat to our businesses. At night people are forced to find alternative lighting for their businesses and safety," he said.

Lazaro added this is happening despite that the council collects the market revenue on daily basis.

Luchenza Municipality is one of the eight earmarked secondary cities.
