Citizens in Mwanza have expressed worry over heightening incidents of some chiefs and other leaders that are reportedly registering ghost beneficiaries and their relations to benefit from various social protection initiatives amid the current hunger situation there.

That aside, we understand that primary school learners in the district are barred from sitting for their end of term examinations for failing to each pay K1000.

This was revealed at Kanduku area on Thursday during the opening of suggestion boxes that were placed in strategic places by Malawi Red cross Society as a platform for rural people to voice out their problems.

Representative of Mwanza district social mobilization committee, Antony Mankhanga said the committee will meet soon to discuss the concerns raised by the people.

“As the district team, we will meet and discuss these issues and give them feedback within seven days,” said Mankhanga.

Malawi Red Cross Program Coordinator for Community Resilience project, Leonard Maganga believes duty bearers will take action on the people’s concerns.

“We are very happy to see people speaking out their challenges. We will keep engaging the ministry of education. What they are saying is that the children are paying the money because they are writing printed examinations but we will continue discussing with the ministry to use the available funding to support such activities unlike asking learners to pay,” said Maganga.

Apart from giving a platform to people to channel their problems to responsible officers, Malawi Red Cross Society is also providing bursaries to needy learners, promoting construction of resilient houses and hygiene in various villages including Nikisi in Mwanza, Chikwawa and Mangochi.

Through the Community Resilience Project, the humanitarian organization is promoting community health, water sanitation and hygiene, disaster risk reduction, empowerment and national society development.
