Chairperson of Mulanje District Council Councilor Thokozani Namoyo has appealed to the faith leaders to frame and preach love related sermons as part of fighting against gender-based violence among their followers and within communities they serve.

Councilor Namoyo speaking on Thursday during the district council's event marking 16 Days of Activism against GBV said almost all perpetrators of GBV belong to the Christian or Muslim denominations and it is therefore important to denounce GBV right in churches or mosques.

“As a council we are making sure that over 60% of our recruitments are women and this is to ensure that we lead by example in promoting gender equality and equity but we need support in fighting against gender inequalities,” said Councilor Namoyo.

District Gender Development Officer in Mulanje Mafunga Jamu told Zodiak Online that some suicides and mental illnesses are effects of GBV.

He advised people to report all forms of GBV to relevant structures like Community Victim Support Units, Police Victim Support Units as well as Gender and Social Welfare Offices.

“Together with our partners, we have managed to reduce marital misunderstandings which usually culminate into other forms of violence through sensitization meetings on gender related laws but physical, economic and psychological violence continue rising due to misunderstandings among people or /and spouses,” said Jamu.

“Unite! Activism against gender-based violence” is the theme for this year’s 16 days of activism against GBV.
