An assessment by the Thyolo District Council indicates that at least 554 families need food, seeds and roofing materials following the damage caused by strong winds and heavy rains this December.

Speaking to Zodiak Online on Sunday, the district's relief and rehabilitation officer, Faith Khamula, says of the figure, 325 households have been affected this weekend while 229 were hit a week ago in the areas of Traditional Authorities Thukuta, Bvumbwe, Kapichi Ngolongoliwa and Nchiramwera.

Khamula has also documented that seven people have been injured including two deaths of lightning strike over the weekend.

"Cumulatively, we can say that a total of 325 households have been affected just this weekend. But starting from early December, we had 229 households that were affected. We have fields of crops which have been damaged, roofs of houses blown off. So, these people need assistance in form of food, seeds to replant, blankets and other essential items", Khamula said.

According to Khamula, an evacuation camp has since been opened at Thangadzuwa primary school housing 10 families.

Meanwhile, Group Village Headman Kapichi whose house has also been damaged sounded an SOS for the displaced families.

GVH Kapichi appealed: "As you can see, the rains have soaked our little food and damaged roofs of our houses. We are asking the government to help us with some materials... We have nowhere to find money to bring back life."

Khamula however indicated that the council is yet to quantify the damaged hectarage of crops.
