Nsanje-Marka Road Misses Revised Completion Deadline

The ministry of transport has disclosed that Nsanje- Marka road construction works will be completed by the end of next month.

The project has missed its 31st December, 2022 revised completion cutoff date, minister of transport Jacob Hara acknowledged on Thursday.

Hara nevertheless says substantially, all works have been completed up to Vila Nova de Frontiera in Mozambique, saying only a 100-meter section is remaining saying all things being equal the works will be completed by the end of next month.

“We had an injunction to stop works on the section to Marka Trade Centre when we were surfacing that section as one resident complained that his house was shaking due to compaction.

“The injunction was lifted on Monday and we expect the contractor to complete the remaining 100 metres which was skipped due to the injunction. So, we can put it at February end, weather permitting,” he said.

According to Hara, what is remaining is a one-week job.

Communities in the district including civil society organizations (csos) ganged up against the contractor who is working on the road China Railway (CR-20) over shoddy work claims citing poor drainage systems.

They claimed they were facing recurrent flooding around the boma as a result.

The 26 kilometers, K11 billion Nsanje- Marka road project earlier missed a 24 month completion deadline.

The project commenced in March, 2019.
