The Ministry of Education has approved the expulsion of 30 students in several secondary schools including 11 for Thyolo secondary school over indiscipline offences.

The ministry's principal secretary, Chikondano Mussa, confirmed the development on Sunday.

Mussa has disclosed: "My office receives a lot of indiscipline reports and now we have dismissed the 30 following recommendations from the school administrators."

According to a communication we have seen addressed to the education division managers, other students are for Mzimba, Ntchisi, Madisi, Salima, Yamba, M'mbomba and Chayamba secondary schools.

The students committed varying offences, with one from Yamba Community Day secondary school, attempting to rape female teacher, arson of school property, teasing and bullying, theft, instigating rebellious behavior, beer drinking and loss of interest in school, among others.

Educationist Dr. Foster Lungu, says it is sad that the dismissal will reduce further the figure of those who complete secondary education in the country.

Lungu has, however, reminded students that like any other community, schools are run with rules that need to be followed to avoid disturbing others.

"What we have to realize is that a school is like any community which has rules. So, if somebody consistently breaks those rules, authorities have to act," he reminded.
