Child Rights Activist Tips Govt on Child Labor

Child rights activist, Memory Ngosi Chisenga, has asked government to enhance monitoring of child labour hotspot areas to address issues of child labor as farmers start processing tobacco in readiness for the opening of this year’s selling season.

Speaking to Zodiak Online on Tuesday, Ngosi said it is high time parents and companies realized the need to ensure children are not allowed to work in tobacco fields.

Chisenga said Malawi is grappling with various forms of violation of children's rights that include child labor.

She claimed that about 2.4 million children in the country are already into child labor arguing enhancing monitoring especially in tobacco fields can help in reversing the trend.

"We are asking the government to enhance inspections in all child labor hotspots areas to ensure the vice is contained," said Chisenga.

However, spokesperson in the Ministry of Labour, Christina Mkutumula, said the ministry has scaled up inspection exercises so that all hotspot areas are checked regularly.

Mkutumula added that government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with tobacco companies so that leaf technicians for the companies are trained on child labor, decent work to avert any labor rights violations.
