A mother of six, Eliza Manyera, from Mangazi village, Senior chief Chimaliro in Thyolo has asked the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) to assist her after she was electrocuted last week by the 'abandoned' power lines.

Manyera has told Zodiak Online that the incident occurred as she was doing a piece work in one of the maize fields at Ndata where one electric pole whose lines had been in suspense for about two months fell on her causing injuries on the head and legs.

"I did not know the lines were live since there was no transformer at Ndata and the poles were down for about four months. Even the owner of the maize field was working when the lines were in that state," Manyera explained.

The woman has since accused the corporation of not assisting her to access referral medical attention on the burns which have paralysed her daily earnings and living.

She appealed: "I was relying on piece works and with this, I am unable to do anything to fend for my children. So ESCOM should do something."

Meanwhile, ESCOM's public relation manager, Kitty Chingota is yet to respond to our questionnaire sent on Tuesday including officials at Chingazi hospital where she was rushed to while unconscious.
