Barely two days after posting an increase of K6 Billion profit in 2022, Illovo Sugar Company has started implementing social corporate responsibility activities, the current one being a donation of K20 million to Limbe health centre in Blantyre to fight cholera.

The company is also intending to construct additional toilets and bathrooms at the facility.

Managing Director of the company, Lekani Katandula told journalists in Blantyre on Thursday that they have also spent K45 million to assist the government to curb further spread of the disease in Nchalo and Dwangwa estates.

“Our office is close to Limbe Health Centre and we felt duty bound to support the hospital to contain the disease,” said Katandula, adding that a community only thrives when it has healthy citizens.

The managing director went on to remind people to adhere to all preventive measures including washing hands after the toilet, before eating, drinking safe water and making sure that they are eating hot food.

He further stated that the company has always been there to support the government in times of emergencies and outbreaks citing the time when Malawi was severely hit by Covid 19.

In charge of Limbe Health Centre, Dora Mwafulirwa has commended Illovo for supporting increasing cases of cholera on a daily basis.

“We continue to receive a lot of cholera cases everyday and we think this assistance from Illovo will lessen the burden that we were experiencing,” explained Mwafulirwa.

Currently, cholera has killed 1, 334 people with total cases hanging at 40, 834 in Malawi.
