Health authorities in Blantyre have turned Limbe and Gateway health centres into cholera referral facilities to provide comprehensive treatment to unstable patients.

District Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Modesta Mwagomba, told Zodiak on Monday that the two centres have been equipped with additional staff, tents and medical supplies to support the patients.

“It is true that Limbe and Gateway are referral cholera facilities because Ndirande and Zingwangwa have no space to accommodate all the patients that they have,” she said.

She added that on a daily basis Limbe health centre is admitting between 12 to 15 patients.

Meanwhile, Interim Country Director for Seed Global Health, Anda Nyondo says is expecting $100, 000 to come in for the national level cholera support.

“There are several key areas that we need to work on. The first is sensitization on cholera, actual treatment to combat cholera and bringing in safe water sources,” Nyondo explained.

The two made the sentiments when Seed Global Health donated cholera medical supplies worth 8.5 million kwacha at Limbe health centre in Blantyre.

This comes when it now seems government and development partners are strengthening collaboration to contain the disease.

In Blantyre cholera has been causing a lot of havoc especially in Bangwe, Makhetha, Zingwangwa and Ndirande.
