In a recent call for application placed in local daily papers for the 2023-2024 cadres, the MPS has not included the height requirement which used to be about 1.6 and 1.5 meters for males and females respectively.

National Police Spokesperson for the Malawi Police Service, Peter Kalaya could not deny nor confirm the development to Zodiak Online on Saturday upon being contacted.

However security expert ,Aubrey Kabisala while acknowledging that the Human Resources Department for the Malawi Police service is mandated to review the traditional requirements for it’s yet to be staff overtime, he pointed out that the rationally behind the height requirement was that police officers should be able to stand prominent in a particular crowd.

“It has been a trend globally for the police services to always consider height when recruiting new cadres mainly with a motive that police officers should be able to stand out within a crowd .

“However, such a requirement is now being viewed as discriminatory with some countries currently considering reviewing it. We may not conclude however that such is the path being taken by the Malawi Police Service”, said Kabisala.

The height requirement in the recruitment of law enforcers has been a bone of contention as the Malawi Police service has been faulted for not adhering to the requirement.
