Education authorities in Machinga have underscored the need to urgently utilize the ongoing tree planting season to address effects of natural disasters in schools whose structures are affected each rainy season.

Headteacher at Nampeya Community Day Secondary School, Anne Ganiza says most schools in the district are prone to disasters as trees around the schools that act like wind shields were cut down, hence the need to replant.

Ganiza said this on Wednesday during a tree planting exercise at her school organized by a businessman cum-politician, Fezile Kadawati who provided over 60 natural and fruit seedlings..

"Our schools in the district are prone to disasters because trees around our the premises were carelessly cut down. We should utilize such exercises to replant the lost resources," she said.

Meanwhile, Kadawati says he has been moved by effects of natural disasters on schools in areas of Senior Chief Nkoola and Traditional Authority Ntumbwinda hence calling on students to own the trees.

"It's sad that our students are not aware of how to plant and take care of trees around their school premises, that is why I decided to bring this campaign to their school," Kadawati noted.

He has however vowed to continue with the tree planting campaign in schools until the offset of the current rainy season.
