The Bakili Muluzi highway in Machinga has been cut off 500 meters from Chinguni trading center following flooding of Namisinje river induced by Cyclone Freddy.

Our visit to the scene found vehicles scrambling to use one section of the road which has also affected delivery of relief items to survivors of the cyclone in affected areas.

Following the damage of the road which connects the Malawi-Mozambique border of Chiponde, movement of trucks has been disrupted.

One minibus river, Willard Bwanali has described the situation as unfortunate, calling on authorities to address the challenge urgently.

"We are failing to conduct our businesses on this road as we are afraid of being involved in an accident. I understand that authorities are occupied right now but they should list this road on roads that need urgent attention after the rains," he said.

As of Tuesday, the Roads Authority disclosed that about 35 roads have been affected with others completely cut off in the southern region due to the on-going cyclone Freddy.
