Mount Meru K3.5m worth cooking oil to Freddy Survivors

Mount Meru has donated 1 ton of cooking oil worth K3.5 million to the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs.

Ven'Katesh, Mount Meru Country Head says the move is in response to the 'Tigwirane Manja' initiative aimed at bailing out those in areas affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy which as of yesterday has displaced 563,771 with over 533 still missing.

Speaking during a handover ceremony, Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda has hailed the gesture, stating it will address some of the food challenges being faced in the evacuation camps.

On Wednesday, President Lazarus Chakwera presented an assessment of the impact of the cyclone, where he appealed for humanitarian assistance.

So far, the southern region of Malawi has 534 camps hosting the survivors who lost their property following the longest lived cyclone in Malawi.
