The clinician, Wellington Ndirande said coughs, diarrhoea and malaria are some of common diseases affecting the cyclone survivors in the camps, but reported that about 85 percent of them are suffering from pneumonia.

Ndirande has among others, attributed the situation to cold conditions that the survivors are exposed to at the camp, further asking for more support in medical supplies such as, mosquito nets and chlorine including blankets.

Meanwhile, Thyolo District Hospital medical officer, Dr. Denis Solomon says they have embarked on mobile clinics in camps where they are providing services on family planning, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) and ARVs since some lost their drugs and medical records.

"We are trying to assist and follow up with these survivors as you know many have lost everything including their drugs and medical records," Dr. Solomon said.

The two said this on Friday when Vice President, Saulos Chilima visited the cyclone survivors at Molele and Mathiya camps in Thyolo.

On his part, Chilima asked the district councils to work with speed in consolidating the comprehensive cyclone assessment reports for government to ably assist the survivors.

He has further has warned those managing relief items against abuse.

In Thyolo, cyclone has affected over 8, 000 households, of which 4, 000 are in 40 camps with 16 deaths, according to the district council.
