Senior Resident Magistrate Assunta Maxwell has ordered 55-year old Chester Mpondo and Jonam Mandala, 25, to pay a fine of K250,000 each or in default to serve a one year jail term over theft in Thyolo.

State prosecutor, Sub-Inspector Felix Senzani told the court that the duo stole 14 Macademia tree seedlings at Southern Flew Estate valued at K1, 400, 000.

However, the two pleaded guilty to the charge.

In mitigation, both Chester and Jonam  asked the court for leniency, saying they are first offenders and that they have family responsibilities.

But prosecutor Senzani prayed for a stiff penalty, arguing that although the convicts are first offenders,  their action impacted negatively on the economic stand of the company.

He further added that theft of estate materials are rampant in the district.

Meanwhile, on Friday Senior Resident Magistrate Maxwell concurred with the state and ordered the two to pay that fine.

Both convicts hail from Samuti Village, Traditional Authority Chimaliro in the district.
