The Baptist Convention of Malawi (BCM) says Christians have a role to play in ensuring that people affected by the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Freddy are reached with physical and spiritual needs.

Vice president for the Convention, Jacqueline Kalenga, told Zodiak Online Friday that the situation is dire in all areas hit by the floods and there is a need for concerted efforts to reach them.

She was speaking in Phalombe after donating food and assorted clothes to two centers of Migowi in Phalombe and Milepa in Chiradzulu respectively valued at over  K5 million.

Kalenga said the in-kind donation has been made possible due to contributions which members of the Baptist church across the country.

“We believe in reaching the physical and spiritual needs of people since it is difficult for people to grasp the word of God when they are affected,” said Kalenga.

She added that people affected by the Cyclone Freddy-induced floods should not lose hope arguing God is still in control despite the present situation.

One of the beneficiaries, Jenipher Chisoni, has described the support as timely, adding she lost everything when floods hit the area.

Chisoni has since appealed for more support as they are planning to return to their respective homes to rebuild houses damaged by floods.

According to Phalombe district commissioner, Douglas Moffat; there is a need for more support to continue assisting the survivors to help them recover fully from the effects of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
