Member of the committee, Ben Phiri says says the institution, which is key in the development of education in the country, as it plays a crucial role in developing materials that are supplied in the country's schools.

Phiri adds that low production of materials such as books is resulting in shortage of books in schools, manifested through sharing of a single book among learners and students.

He, however, told Zodiak Online that the country has for long neglected curriculum development, hence calling for its reviewal.

MIE Board Chairperson, Professor Address Malata has applauded Honourable Members for supporting the idea of constructing a printing press at MIE.

Malata has lobbied with the committee to allocate funds for curriculum review that was last conducted 15 years ago for primary schools and 8 years ago for secondary schools.

"The curriculum has been due over time and not good to the education in Malawi. Students are coming out of Universities but finding a lot of challenges, an indication that they have been learning an outdated curriculum. This is the reason our education in Malawi is not the same with our neighboring countries in the region," said Malata.

This was noted on Saturday as members of the committee visited MIE offices in Zomba to appreciate several projects being undertake to uplift education standards in the country.
