Salary Delays Anger Auxiliary Teachers

Auxiliary teachers in the country have expressed dismay over a communication that processing of their April dues will delay following some technical changes on payment mode.

Some teachers in Thyolo, Mzimba and Balaka have described this as a big blow which will expose them to untold economic misery, adding that an K80, 000 monthly stipend they receive, is already too little.

A communication from some District Education Manager's offices has indicated that funds for auxiliary teachers salaries are not yet in, as such processing of their same will wait as they might be changes on the payment system.

"We are very much concerned with our salary delays. Every month they attribute it to a technical problem. So where can we get food, groceries and rental fees? We are tired," one teacher said.

The teachers have since challenged government to dissolve this temporary employment and absorb them in the civil service as a solution.

Another pleaded: "The money we earn is not corresponding to the cost of living nowadays. So it is my plea to government that they recruit us because we are facing with alot of problems".

Ministry of Education spokesperson, Mphatso Nkuonera has asked for more time to gather facts.

"Currently, I don't have enough information let me come back to you," Nkuonera said on Monday this week.

Meanwhile, Zodiak Online has been informed that the auxiliary teachers are planning a sit-in from Friday, 28 April 2023 should there be further delays on the dues.

From 2021, the government has been hiring the auxiliary teachers as one way of complementing efforts of mitigating Covid-19 pandemic in schools.
