The Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DoDMA) says it will support councils in acquisition of land for relocation of Cyclone Freddy displaced households whose native settlement land is now inhabitable.

DODMA Commissioner Charles Kalemba said this on Wednesday at Misawa camp in Mulanje when he received relief items from the Chinese Government for the Cyclone Freddy displaced households in Traditional Authority Njema.

Kalemba said identification of land is the hands of councils.

“Decommissioning exercise is going on well and we are sure that within two or three months all camps will be decommissioned but people will not be chased from the camps when they do not have safer places to stay,” said Kalemba.

Chairperson of Mulanje District Council, Councilor Thokozani Namoyo said a full council meeting will convene soon to discuss the land issue.

“We had 135 camps and currently only ten are yet to be decommissioned and all are in Traditional Authority Njema, the worst hit area in the district,” said Councilor Namoyo.

On his part, Deputy Chinese Ambassador to Malawi Wang Hao said his Government will support the Government of Malawi in post disaster construction.

“We are still communicating with Malawi on how we can assist in the reconstruction exercise,” said Hao.

The items which the Chinese government donated to the disaster affected people in Mulanje were maize flour, beans, sugar, salt and plastic buckets.
